Obituary

Brenda Johnson transitioned into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 28, 2021, at the age of 65.

Brenda was born to Ben and Ludie Chandler on February 2, 1956, in St. Louis, MO.  She was the second oldest of five children, her siblings being Shearon, Joyce, Ben Jr., Beverly, and Barbara.  As a youth, she displayed musical talent from a young age.  Her vocal talent grew in the church and in the Sodan High School choir.  Her instrumental ability began as a clarinet player in the marching band.  These set the stage for a lifetime of devotion to music.  It was one of her greatest loves, catapulting her into a future that would provide many opportunities for her musical talent to shine forth.

Brenda's educational background extended up to the university level.  She graduated from the University of Tulsa with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance in May 2000. Being raised in the church and continuing in the church throughout her entire adult life, Brenda was honored to lead believers of same-like faith in worship in song on Sunday mornings and at special events over her lifetime.  Her heart was committed to the work of Christ.  This was Brenda's foremost mission: to see the heart of Christ made known to all.  She had a zeal for life that was contagious and a warmth that softened every heart she encountered.

Brenda was honored and inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in Tulsa, OK, for her outstanding vocals as a singer/performer of Jazz music.  She won the 2010 Jazz Hall of Fame Legacy Award.  Jazz was an unending love that gave her joy and gave her the opportunity to entertain and uplift others.

Brenda met her husband, Cortez Johnson, in a band in 1988 and married him on September 9, 1989 in Tulsa, OK.  They shared 32 years of tender love.  She was a devoted wife and mother of 6 children: Christopher, Perry, Danielle, Joshua, Corine, and Joel.  She was known as "Honeygram" to her beautiful grandchildren: Nehemiah, Karis, Sasha, and Gloria.

Brenda was proceeded in death by her mother, Ludie Mae Chandler, and her sister, Shearon Chandler-Jackson. She is survived by her father, Ben, her three sisters, Joyce, Beverly, and Barbara, her brother, Ben Jr., her children, Chris, Perry, Danielle, Joshua, Corine, and Joel, and her grandchildren, Nehemiah, Karis, Sasha, and Gloria.
