Obituary

A legacy of love, faith and strength, Carol Lee Sanders passed away on July 9, 2021, in her hometown of Tulsa. She was born here on November 13,1935, to Ernest and Gladys Stucker.

Carol's love for Tulsa lasted a lifetime. She attended Lee Elementary School, Horace Mann and the Class of 1953 at Central High School. Carol attended Oklahoma State University and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Carol married William "Bill" Sanders on June 1,1957. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Tulsa for over seventy years and loved the congregation. Carol and Bill had two children, Laura Lee Sanders and Ernie Sanders.

Carol loved serving in her community and especially with youth. She had a deep passion for the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Tulsa, where her father served as president in 1948, and her husband in 1980. She served as secretary of the Kiwanis Club for many years and was diligent in keeping up with the lives of members. She served twice as president of the auxiliary Kiwanitas.

Carol and her husband were active in the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Carol judged many state pageants and was on the board of directors. The Sanders' lives were tragically altered October 6,1987, when their daughter Laura Lee was murdered. Even through this horrible pain, she remained a woman full of joy, hope and grace.

Carol was a bright light in the lives of many families who lost children to crime. She was a victims advocate and sought justice for Laura Lee for the rest of her life with the support of many, especially Lori Fullbright with Channel 6 News.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Sanders, her parents, Ernest and Gladys Stucker, brother Robert Dale Stucker, and daughter Laura Lee Sanders. She is survived by her son Ernie, and her life long friend Dede Wallace Seal, special daughter, Corby Carlin Winters and many loyal friends.

Her service will be held on Thursday July 22, at 11 a.m., First Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in Stephens Hall.  Her graveside service will be at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Laura Lee Sanders Endowment Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 709 S. Boston Ave. 74119.
