Dale Edmond's Obituary
Ola Dale "Dale" Barbaree Edmond, passed away June 4, 2019 from complications of mixed dementia. She was 93, lived an amazing life and accomplished much in it. She loved her family, old houses, antiques, the color red, books, plants, politics, adventures, good friends and Tulsa's Gilcrease Museum. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a practical outlook on life. She was always ready to lend a shoulder, an ear or a helping hand. She was world travelled, well read and wise.
Born January 2, 1926 in Bodcaw, Arkansas she was a lifelong educator, first in her native Arkansas before migrating to Tulsa to work on her Master's at the University of Tulsa. It was at T.U. where she met Clay Manning Edmond, who would become her husband. They settled in Tulsa, raising and nurturing a family, whose every achievement through each generation, filled her with pride.
Our mom was a professional woman long before it was vogue to be so. And those achievements were notable. She spent 35 years with Tulsa Public Schools as a classroom teacher; Language Arts and Math Supervisor; Carnegie Elementary Principal, Director of Elementary Schools and Director Curriculum and Instruction. Along the way she received her Doctorate of Education at Oklahoma State University. She was also a Phi Beta Kappa.
She took early retirement from Tulsa Public Schools to serve as Education Consultant for IBM with responsibilities in a seven state region. After a time, she had a longing to return to her native state and did so, first, as Principal to Bentonville Kindergarten Center, Bentonville, AR; and later as Principal to Beryl Henry Elementary School, Hope, AR.
She had always wanted to teach at the collegiate level and got that opportunity as adjunct twice – at the University Center at Tulsa and at Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, AR.
She received significant recognition in her field as an educator internationally and nationally, particularly for her work in curriculum development for the gifted and talented; and for the design of early childhood development and parental involvement programs.
Her civic and community involvement included member, First Methodist United Church, Tulsa, later transferring to New Haven Methodist Church; former member of the advisory board, Fine Arts and Humanities Council, State of Oklahoma; former member, Civitan Club, Tulsa; former member, Governor's Committee for Teacher Effectiveness, State of Oklahoma; former education advisor, Tulsa Chapter, National Council of Jewish Women.
She is survived by daughters Kobe Henry (Phillip); Rebekah Henry; granddaughters Kelly Conwell (Tracy); Megan Victory; grandson Zachary Manley (Andrea); great granddaughter Ava Manley; great grandsons, Blake and Clay Conwell; Kingston Victory; and Eli and Owen Calvin all of Tulsa. Nieces Terri Fairley of Raleigh, NC; Nita Hemmeter, New Orleans, LA; Nephew Tom Fairley, Miami FL, and many more.
She was predeceased by husband, Clay M. Edmond, infant son, Michael Thomas Edmond; parents Thomas Jackson and Edna Viola (Jordan) Barbaree; sisters Frances Jean Fairley; Alice Aline Barbaree and brother Thomas Tillman Barbaree.
Our family would to thank the caregivers at Memory Care at Emerald, Claremore and Grace Hospice Tulsa. Arrangements are under the direction of Stanley's , Tulsa. A private celebration of life is planned at a later date.
