Dennis Lee Pogue passed away March 14, 2024, under the loving care of University Village and LiveWell Hospice. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew him . Born on September 12, 1940, in Hennessey, Oklahoma, to Elton Marshall Pogue and Virga Mae Pogue (Pearson). Dennis moved around Oklahoma a lot during his early years, but eventually ended up in Tulsa. He is a 1958 graduate of Edison High School.

Dennis' work life began with odd jobs for his father at Pogue's Display. The business was well known to educators and anyone who needed a display for holidays or special occasions. Dennis even decorated a few windows for department stores around the Tulsa area. In 1964, (after he met Paulette) Dennis decided to put in an application at an employment office and was soon granted an interview with Bernie McNickle at Reeve Dental Supply. This was the beginning of a new life for Dennis.

Early in 1964, a former classmate and his wife introduced Dennis to the woman who would become his wife. Paulette Braden, a young teacher, would change Dennis' life.

In the summer of 1965, having to fulfill his commitment serving in the Air National Guard, Dennis shipped out to Biloxi, Mississippi, for two weeks of summer camp. Upon his return, he asked the young teacher to be his wife and she said "yes" (after a week of thought!). Wedding plans were made, and after a year long engagement, the happy couple married on June 25, 1966.

1968 brought with it a pregnant wife, and in 1969, their daughter Pamela was born. Dennis celebrated the joyous occasion by passing out and ending up under the hospital bed! Having been up all night awaiting the birth of his child, Dennis had neglected to eat and the smell of the floor cleaner knocked him clean out (no pun untended). From then on, the nurses asked Paulette how Dennis was feeling. A little comedy to lighten the mood, Dennis Pogue style!

Dennis devoted many of the following years allowing himself to be the subject of his daughters recorded interviews and the singer of silly songs.  He spent many hours fishing, playing softball, soccer, and volleyball, teaching her how to use tools, fix cars, and laugh at all the wrong times. He enjoyed traveling with Paulette, going on cruises and travelling overseas, staying in the Outer Banks with friends they had made on one of their cruises, going to football and basketball games and going to plays and concerts and going out to eat.

In 1994, after a terrible car accident, Dennis' bosses and colleagues showed an outpouring of love and support. They knew the best way to pay him back for his dedication and love for his job was to create a way for him to get back to work! Dennis accepted with humble tenacity. During his lengthy recovery, Dennis went back to work full speed from his hospital bed in the living room, with an 800 number his employer had installed. And, once his feet hit the ground, he was ready to be out on the road again.

Dennis continued to hit the road until his retirement in 2008. The company he started with may have changed hands a few times during Dennis' tenure, but his commitment to his job never changed.

Retirement allowed Dennis to devote more time to spiritual endeavors. Dennis was a faithful member of  Harvard Avenue Christian Church for more than 40 years where he served as a deacon. He participated in the Seekers Sunday School class where he enjoyed deep fellowship with his classmates. Dennis also went to Nashville on a mission trip with the church and spent many hours serving meals at the Day Center for the Homeless. He packed boxes at the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

In 1999 Dennis attended the Walk to Emmaus and provided support for many years on subsequent walks. He served as an Table Leader on 2 walks as well as serving in many other capacities. He was a devoted attendee of his Walk to Emmaus accountability group with a group of men from Harvard Avenue for more than 25 years.

Dennis was also a long time attendee of the Added Dimension weekly Tuesday luncheon and devotion at First Baptist Church which he often attended with his friend, David Maddox. Dennis found great inspiration in the message delivered by Rev. Deron Spoo each week.

Even with Paulette's passing in January of 2023, after 56 years of marriage, Dennis never slowed down. He was always going and doing, and had a list he said he never could quite get finished. In January of 2024, Dennis moved in to an assisted living apartment at University Village. Although he was only able to enjoy a few weeks there before he got COVID, he enjoyed his time there and was looking forward to the activities and, most of all, the food.

Dennis is survived by his daughter Pamela, close family friend Pat Smith, children of the heart, Kimberly Golding Waldrep and Kevin Golding, his nieces and nephew, godchildren and many wonderful friends. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Elton Pogue and Virga Becker, brother Roy Pogue, wife Paulette Braden Pogue, sister-in-law Marsha Kay Dunham and close family friend Carol Jean Souvignier.

The family would like to thank the people of Harvard Avenue Christian Church, the staff of University Village especially Stacy Rind, the staff of LiveWell Hospice especially Toni and Tatum, and Cassandra Carter and her staff at Stanley's Funeral Home.

The graveside service will be held at Highland Cemetery, Oilton, Oklahoma at 10 am. A memorial service will be held at Harvard Avenue Christian Church in Tulsa, Friday, April 5th at 1 pm. In place of flowers, donations can be made to Harvard Avenue Christian Church.
