Don was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the only child of George Martin Calvert and Jewel (Riley) Calvert. He grew up in Muskogee County and moved to Tulsa in late childhood, graduating from Central High School.

Following high school, Don served in the United States Marine Corps.  He then spent time working and traveling in California and Colorado before returning to Oklahoma where he obtained his education degree.  He devoted the balance of his working life to teaching and coaching in Tulsa Public Schools, first as a PE coach at Monroe Middle School, then as a Driver-Ed teacher at Rogers High School where he coached the wrestling and tennis teams.  He was a beloved educator, coach, and mentor to countless students over the course of his career.  Following retirement, Don spent some time as a home builder, but that endeavor was quickly eclipsed by a love of golf that would continue blossoming for the balance of his life.

Don was a gifted athlete, and a phenomenally tough individual, but was equally gentle and caring as a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mentor.  His impact on the lives he touched over his eighty-five years is inestimable.

Don is survived by his wife of the past 15 years, Patsy (Shelton) Calvert, sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Carey (Cobb) Calvert of Tulsa and Barry and Jennifer (Stang) Calvert of Broken Arrow, grandchildren Annie, Chad, Jack, and Grant, two great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 28 years, Ruth Ann (Harney) Calvert.

Memorial Service will be Friday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Chapel in Tulsa.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Tee Tulsa.
