Obituary

Douglas Gentz, beloved husband, brother and uncle passed away on Friday, Aug. 19. He was 70. Born in Tulsa to Warren and Mary Ellen Gentz, he is survived by his wife of 38 years, Vivian Gentz, his sister Julia Gentz, brother-in-law Joseph Staskal, and nephews Paul and Mark Auger, John Staskal, and many other family members.

Doug attended Oklahoma State University, and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1980. After serving as a staff psychologist in Claremore, Okla., he became a consultant for the City of Tulsa. In that capacity, he served as the Chief Psychologist and owner/director of Psychological Services for the Tulsa Police and Fire Departments from 1982 - 2017. It was a job he dearly loved for forty years, providing counseling to clients of the two departments, as well as education and training programs and research and development projects. He also served as the Team Psychologist for the Tulsa Police Department Special Operations Team and provided training for crisis negotiators. After 2017, he continued with his private practice, and later specialized in consultation and training to public safety agencies.

Doug was the author or co-author of 16 articles published in professional journals, and spoke at many psychological conferences and meetings. He was a member of six professional associations, including the IACP Police Psychological Services Section, the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology and the National Tactical Officers Association.

Family and friends will remember his love of the outdoors, exercising, music and riding his motorcycle. In his middle years, he enjoyed bike riding, scuba diving and running; he ran several marathons. He always had time for friends and loved ones. His generous, kind, loving and thoughtful spirit will be missed by many. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
