Obituary

?

James "Jim" Carleton Paynter, Jr., was born November 24th, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to James and Cecile Paynter.

Though born in Michigan and living many other places over the years, Jim considered himself most at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he lived there for the majority of his life. He graduated from Edison High School in 1964 and attended the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated with a degree in business. After college, he spent time in Alaska as a member of the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of Captain. Jim returned to Tulsa and, when his father passed away, took over the family business, Roadrunner Portable Buildings. He went on to work for American Airlines for more than 20 years before retiring in 2013. During this time, Jim also served on active duty in the Oklahoma Air National Guard where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant.

Jim was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather, as well as a dear friend to many, some for several decades. Besides family and friends, Jim's greatest love was music. He had a vast appreciation and knowledge of many types of music, but he always carried a special affinity for the music and musicians of his beloved Tulsa. Jim was a lifelong, avid supporter of the local, live music scene. He also enjoyed watching sports, fishing, boating, and entertaining family at his home on Lake Skiatook. In years past, Jim also traded in antiques, with a particular interest in Art Deco items, and he studied Tae Kwon-Do at Kang's Institute and Guthery''s Tae Kwon-Do in Tulsa.

Jim passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa on June 11th, 2018 at the age of 71 o . Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Bettye, his children James (Courtney) and Shannon, his sister Sue, his brothers, John and Rick (Sharon), and his stepdaughter Tiffany (Jim) Taylor. Jim will also be dearly missed by his five grandchildren, James, Candace, Dylan, Henry, and Benjamin, and his great-grandchildren, Ja'Lias and Ma'cilas. He will also be remembered fondly by his extended family and his large group of dear friends. You were all very special to him, and he loved each of you dearly.
