Mary Wheeler Prewitt Brown died February 9, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born on March 5, 1941, in Montgomery, Alabama to Taylor A. Prewitt Jr. and Mary Wheeler Prewitt, and grew up in McGehee, Arkansas.
She graduated from high school in 1959 as class valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1963 with a degree in history. She was a Chi Omega and was selected for Phi Beta Kappa. Married in 1964, she taught high school history in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and California.
Arriving in Tulsa in 1976, she devoted herself to motherhood, homemaking, and participation in the artistic and charitable life of Tulsa. Her particular interests included the Circle of Care Ministries, the Oklahoma Methodist Foundation, Boston Avenue Methodist Church, Sistema Tulsa, Tulsa Ballet, and the Peggy Helmerich Distinguished Author Series.
She is survived by husband Spencer H. Brown Jr., MD, sons Brennan P. Brown and Kendrick P. Brown, daughter-in-law Jenna L. Stern and granddaughter Calla L. Brown, brother Taylor A. Prewitt, MD and sister-in-law Mary Prewitt.
In lieu of flowers, may we suggest remembrances in her name to Sistema Tulsa or Tulsa Ballet. Services will be held at 10:30AM, Monday, February 20, 2023, at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. A reception will follow. Masks are suggested.
