Obituary

Norma Ardis Whitman passed away peacefully in her sleep July 9.

Norma was born on February 13, 1927, to Hans Oscar and Anna Birkley Gunderson on the family farm outside Maskell, Nebraska. She was the sixth of eight children. She married her first husband, Floyd Arthur Snyder, in January of 1953, and their son, Douglas Floyd, was born in 1954. Floyd passed away in 1966, after their move down to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Norma met Harold Baldwin Whitman through their mutual involvement at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, and they married July 19, 1968. Their involvement with the church continued throughout their adult lives, and they joined John Calvin Presbyterian Church when St. Andrews closed.

Norma was always proud of her Norwegian heritage, and she loved to cook.

For years, she and Harold had a cabin on Fort Gibson Lake, and she found peace and joy on the lake, whether she was reeling in a big fish from her boat or watching the sunset across the lake. Harold passed away February 2012.

Norma is survived by her son, Douglas (DeAngaLea) Snyder, stepdaughter Carol Evans, and stepson David (Gina) Whitman; grandchildren Jeff Akins, Adam & Abigail Whitman, and Angela Selman; great-grandson Colby; nieces and nephews; beloved dog, Abby.

A memorial service will be held at John Knox Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 11:00am. Donations to Clarehouse in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Norma spent her last days with exceptional care, peace, and dignity, would be appreciated.
