Rex was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Leona and the late Fred Smith. He was raised in Sapulpa, and spent much of his adult life in Broken Arrow. He passed away on Thursday, March 5th, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones and his beloved dog.

Rex attended Tulsa and Sapulpa schools, graduating in the class of 1968. Rex furthered his education by attending college at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, graduating in 1972. Through elementary, high school, and college, he cultivated many friendships that would last a lifetime. Following college, he quickly started his life-long career in sales. Salesmanship was such a part of who he was, that he would sell you something you already owned! He retired in 2012, but never stopped being a salesman.

Rex was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He never wavered in his passionate adoration for his late wife, Cheryl, who preceded him in death in 2018. He loved to brag on his children, Julie, Graham, and Derek. In addition, he forged very special relationships with their spouses, Mathieu and Victoria. He loved spending time doting on his grandchildren, Lillian, Ethan, Derek Michael, Christine, and Katie.

Fishing was a favorite hobby, especially with Cheryl. They loved going to the lake together, spending countless hours on their pontoon boat, trolling the coves of Oklahoma's many lakes for anything that would bite. In retirement, days were spent around the camping trailer with their beloved dog, Rusty. They would regularly spend weekdays camping at Strayhorn Landing with Rick & Lynda, Butch & Kay, or Ronnie & Kathy, only returning home on weekends to check the mail and do laundry. They expanded their network of friendships by hauling the camper on road trips, and making new friends at every stop.

Rex is survived by his mother, Leona Carr; Charles and Marilyn Allred, father-in-law and mother-in-law; children, Julie (Mat) Hawksworth and Graham (Victoria) Smith, stepson Derek Lester; grandchildren, Lillian and Ethan Hawksworth, step-grandchildren, Derek Michael (Lydia) Lester, Christine Lester, Katie (Trevor) Vaughan; great-grandchildren, Kaley Lester and Harper Vaughan; siblings, Rick (Lynda) Smith, Terry (Kay) Allred; nieces and nephews, Ryan, Sarah, Karri, Mikel, Rob; aunt, Norma; and cousins, Dyan, Steve, Bryan, and Keren, as well as many other extended family members.

Rex's charm and humor were second to none, making friends in all areas of life. Childhood and college friends, work colleagues, neighbors, and fellow campers were all important in his life. His poker night buddies were some of the closest and most cherished relationships through the years; Dick Steeples, Lynn Rainwater, Tom Robertson, George Hummingbird, Doug Joseph, Wayne Walkup, Mike McCrory, Larry Griffin, Kim Stover and Larry McClure.
