Marie passed away at her home on March 20, 2020, at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 22 days. She lived not only a long life, but a full life. Marie celebrated life with her family, friends and everyone she met.

Marie was born October 28, 1923, to Morris and Addie Smith in Quay, OK. Marie had 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Marie graduated in 1941 from Central High School in Tulsa, OK. Marie married the love of her life, Earle Horton, Jr. on August 12, 1942, and from their union they have four children: Earle "Duke" Horton, III; Kent Horton; Mindie Eason; and Lisa Riddle. Marie and Earle were happily married for 56 years until his death in 1999.

Marie was a Sales Associate for the Carlin Shop for 16 years before moving to the historic Miss Jackson's at Utica Square where she worked for 27 years. Marie was eager to serve the clientele of the Carlin Shop and Miss Jackson's; she engaged each person with her own brand of personal service. She knew her customers well and loved celebrating their lives, and those of their family members, through their interactions at Miss Jackson's. Despite her age and because of her ability to socially interact with 'her' clients, and the employees, Marie worked at Miss Jackson's right up until it closed in 2015.

Marie loved the fine art of calligraphy and anyone who knew her well had likely received one of her hand drawn calligraphic envelopes and cards. Marie also did professional calligraphy work by penning addresses on wedding invitations and dinner place cards for social events.

Marie was always interested in the weather and could have easily sponsored the Jim Giles, weatherman's fan club. When a meteorologist said, 'get in your 'fraidy hole', Marie was bound for the closet. She loved the sunshine and being outdoors, particularly enjoying the beautiful flowers and trees in the yard. Marie's love of the outdoors also led to her love of taking a 'ride' in the car. She didn't care the destination; she just wanted to ride and enjoy the scenery.

Marie's greatest pleasure was sitting in the sunshine on her back-yard swing surrounded by her family, especially 'swinging' with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was insistent every guest of her home was offered a beverage or snack. When her grandchildren were young, her famous Orange Julius drink was the ultimate expression of her hospitality and love. Marie wasn't afraid to get down in the floor for a 'tea party' with a grandchild or a great-grandchild; however, the difference here was that sometimes the 'tea party' used real china cups.

Marie had a refreshing interpersonal style and outlook on life. She looked for the good in things and in people. Marie was consistent in teaching the adage, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Further, she would quickly correct someone who made an 'off-color' remark by saying, "We don't say those things around here". Marie greeted folks as if they were long-lost friends. She was known to invade a person's 'personal space' and grab them by the wrist during discussions, so that they knew they had her undivided attention. No matter how brief the interaction, you always left a conversation with Marie knowing that she was interested in how you were doing, and she would remember your conversation the next time you met.

Marie is preceded in death by: her parents, Morris Smith and Addie Smith; her husband, Earle Horton, Jr.; her siblings Lyn Smith, Mack Smith, Margaret Chapin, Carol Shoe, Ruth Mach, Warren Smith, JB Smith, and Bette Geiger.

Marie is survived by: Earle "Duke" Horton, III, of Tulsa; Kent and Lynne Horton of Owasso; Mindie and Jim Eason of Tulsa; Lisa and Ray Riddle of Bristow; along with 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marie was both elegant and well spoken, she loved to laugh and enjoy her friends and family. A woman of quiet faith, we know she and Earle are dancing together for eternity.
